Author Guidelines

Types of Submission

The Journal publishes the following types of submission: 1) full-length original articles, which has not been published previously; 2) reviews of books not more than two years old.

Requirements for Article

The papers may be submitted in English, Ukrainian or Russian languages.

The full-length article, including annotation, appendices and references, should be not less than 25,000 characters, and should not exceed 50,000 characters. Book reviews should be about 5,000 – 10,000 characters.

Title page of the article should include the following information:

– Universal Decimal Classification (UDC);

– Full name of the author; author’s affiliation (Institution, position, academic degree, e-mail);

– Title of the article;

– Abstract (about 2,000 characters; the abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results, and major conclusions);

– 3-5 Keywords.

 

Structure of Articles

The article should be divided into clearly defined and numbered sections:

  1. Introduction (about 3,000 characters; the objectives of the work and literature survey).
  2. Research methods (explain which methods and what for were used).
  3. Results and discussion (write about the main results of the research).
  4. Conclusions (about 2,000 characters).
  5. Acknowledgements.
  6. Tables and Appendices (should have titles and numbers; notes should be stirred just below the tables).
  7. References.

 

References must be submitted in order of their citation in the text.

Citations in the text

Every reference cited in the text should be present in the Reference list and vice versa.

Citations in the text should be followed by the reference number of the source (as it is numbered in the Reference list) and after the comma a page numbers should be written. If the author refers to several different sources at once, then their numbers should be separated with the semicolon.

Example:

[1, p.44; 2, p.35].

 

Reference list

References must be listed at the end of the manuscript and numbered in order of their citation in the text. Full details of the source are required.

References should be in Roman script and in Harvard-style. Hereinafter you can find the examples of how to use the Harvard reference system.

 

Reference to the article in Printed Journal

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Author, A.A. (2013), “Title of article”, Title of Journal, vol. 10, no. 2, pp. 49-53.

Author, A.A., Author, B.B. & Author, C.C. (2014), “Title of article”, Title of Journal, vol. 11, no. 3, pp. 85-94.

Example:

Van der Geer, J., Hanraads, J.A.J. & Lupton, R.A. (2010), “The art of writing a scientific article”, Journal of Scientific Communications, no. 163, pp. 51–59.

 

Reference to the article in Electronic Journal

Example:

Gilmore, J. (2014), “Translating American Exceptionalism: Comparing Presidential Discourse About the United States at Home and Abroad”, International Journal of Communication, vol. 8, available at: http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/view/2336/1263 (accessed 05 December 2014).

 

Reference to the Book

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Author, A.A., Author, B.B. & Author, C.C. (2014), Title of Book, Publisher, City of publication, 593 p.

Example:

Rizun, V.V. & Skotnykova, T.V. (2008), Research Methods in Journalism Studies: a Textbook, 2nd ed., Presa Ukrajiny, Kyiv, 144 p.

 

Reference to the Edited Book

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Editor, E.E. (Ed.) (2014), Title of Book, Publisher, City of publication, 503 p.

Example:

Perepelytsia, H.M. (Ed.) (2014), Foreign Policy of Ukraine – 2013: Strategic Assessments, Forecasts and Priorities, Stylos, Kyiv, 352 p.

 

Reference to the Chapter in Edited Book

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Author, A.A. (2014), “Title of chapter”, in Editor, E.E. (Ed.), Title of Book, Publisher, City of publication, 593 p.

Example:

Mettam, G.R., & Adams, L.B. (2009), “How to prepare an electronic version of your article”, in Jones, B.S. & Smith, R.Z. (Eds.), Introduction to the Electronic Age, E-Publishing Inc., New York, pp. 281–304.

 

Reference to the Dissertation or the Abstract of Dissertation

Examples:

Reference to the Conference Paper

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Reference to the Article in Online Resource (Website)

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Example:

Reference to the Anonymous Article in Online Resource (Website)

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Title of edition (2014), “Title of article”, available at: url (accessed date).

Example:

BBC NEWS (2014), “Ukraine profile”, available at: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-18018002 (accessed 09 December 2014).

 

Reference to the Document issued by the Corporate Author (e.g. Laws, Resolutions etc.)

The basic structure of the reference should be as the following:

Organization name (2014), Title of document, Publisher, City of publication, 593 p.

Example:

Council of the European Union (2014), Council conclusions on Ukraine, 20 October 2014, Luxembourg, available at: http://www.consilium.europa.eu/uedocs/cms_data/docs/pressdata/EN/foraff/145211.pdf (accessed 05 December 2014).

 

Copyright

The submission of the manuscript to the Editorial Board of the Scientific Notes of the Institute of Journalism involves the consent of the author / authors to publish the paper in print and electronic versions of the Journal, and to transfer to the Journal the respective copyright. The author guarantees that the submitted manuscript does not infringe copyright or other rights of any party, and that the paper has not been previously published and is not submitted simultaneously to any other edition.
